The WJHS Drama Club presents the comedy CYRANO LOVES ROXANNE. This parody of the classic French play, CYRANO DE BERGERAC, will be held Thursday, 2/11, and Friday, 2/12, at 7 PM both nights. Admission is $5.
They say that sometimes love travels a rocky path. This one has to run an obstacle course. Cyrano de Bergerac had long been smitten with the fair but niave Roxanne, mostly through the letters they have written to each other. Imagine his surprise when he finds she is also visiting Comon, France, at the same time as his holiday.
In fact, they are both staying at the “Comon Inn." However, before he can pursue his love, he is detoured by kidnapping sailors, who need a new ‘recruit’ to get them in good with their captain. As if this weren’t enough, Cyrano’s good friend, Maurice, shows up. Unbeknownst to Cyrano his friend has already met Roxanne and swept her off her feet. Now does Cyrano tell Roxanne of his own feelings or step aside for
Maurice? You think this is complicated? Adding insult to injury, Cyrano ends up writing the words of love that Maurice spouts to Roxanne. Swords flash as fast as the dialogue in this send-up of seventeenth century France and only the servants know the real story.
The costumes are on generous loan from Sewanee University. Sword-fighting choreographed by Donald Fann, Executive Director of the Arts Center
of Cannon County
Director Karen Lewis says, "These junior high students have worked hard to present an entertaining show. Our dashing lead, Chris Freimuth, has sacrificed countless hours to become the graceful swash-buckling, poetry-spouting Cyrano we love from classic literature, and, yes, he dons the most marvelous proboscis just like you've seen in the movies! We hope the community will encourage the efforts of all our students and adult volunteers. Despite the hilarity this show provides, we are reminded that if one can look beyond the physical, one finds the true beauty within a man's soul."
The WJHS comedy showcases sixteen cast members assisted by two student directors. Starring on the WJHS stage are Katy Ball, Sierra Coffee, Amber Crosslin, Michelle Davis, Dylan Duke, Chris Freimuth, Sabrina Gilliam, Tamia Jackson, Caleb King, Angie Lazo, MacKenzie Lewis, Krishna Patel, Hunter Powers, Bruce Thompson, Brandie White, and Josh Wilson. Ella Hutchings and Danielle Rocha are student assistants to the director.
