The Lady Raider basketball team needed a win at Cookeville
Tuesday night to keep from starting 1-2 in District 6-3A play and that
is exactly what they got. The CCHS defense was stifling and the
offense scored when it need to in the fourth quarter.
“It was a huge win – it was a win on the road and a win in the district.
Whoever can win a couple games on the road in the district, I
think is going to have a good chance to win the championship,” said
head coach David Muckle. “It will surprise if anyone wins the district
with less than two losses. I was thinking that Cumberland looked like
they were in the driver seat and then White County beat them. This is
going to be a league that will play out to the very end. “
Coffee County trailed 21-15 heading into the final period of play
Tuesday night but scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to win the
game. Katie Reid scored seven points in the quarter, including five
from the charity stripe.
Ginny Clayborne was the team’s leading scorer on the night with
11.
Cookeville led 7-6 at the end of the first and 13-12 at the intermission.
The third quarter belonged to the home team as it out-scored the Lady Raiders 8-3 and held a five-point
lead entering the fourth. The visiting team took complete control in the final period.
Coffee County scored 18 points in the quarter; while holding the Lady Cavaliers to six.
“When our offense finally started clicking in the fourth quarter of defense also improved. It
was a big confid e n c e booster for us against a team that is well coached and doesn’t lose many
games at home,” Muckle added. “I just hope we can respond to this break well. We ran hard today
in practice and hit some decent shots and handled the ball well. Sunday and Monday we are going to get in
here and really press.”
The Lady Raiders had the rest of the week off after the Coo k e v i l l e game and will host w h i t e
