The Coffee County Red Raider football team endured bitter cold and even snow in its first week of spring football practice, but coach Eddie Nunley says the team showed improvement through the week.
“We are still looking for lineman, I think we have improved some this week even though the weather hasn't cooperated. We have some good ones to chose from we just have to get them to pop up and know what they are supposed to do,” said Nunley.
The coach also praised his backfield while saying the ultimate goal is to be ready for the 2010 season.
Nunley said the main goal for Spring practice is to find consistency.
“We want to see a little more consistency in our line blocking and in our backs making cuts. We also want to see how our experienced players and going to fit in with the new kids that are going to have to step up and play. We are decent at our skill spots; we feel like we have a couple guys at each running-back position and are working Chris (Murray) and Jesse (Brown) at quarterback and whichever one doesn't make it there will be either a receiver or a running-back."
Defensively Nunely says the team is getting better.
"Our defense is coming along but right now we are mixing and matching."
Defensive coordinator Coy Sisk agreed.
"They are coming along. There are a lot of spots open but the guys are working hard. They are all up for grabs," said Sisk.
"I think Charles Jones has done a great job this week. I think the secondary is going to be pretty solid by the time we are done and up front we have a lot of different ways we can go right now. We can be really big or really small and move around a lot up there. We are hoping some more guys come around, we are looking for some big things out of some young kids," added Sisk.
The Raiders will cap Spring practice Friday with the Spring Game against East Ridge high school at Carden Jarrell field.
